Feliz Cinco de Mayo!
EcoBrite makes a point to embrace and celebrate diversity. So, we are always excited to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
It is the commemoration of the victory of 4,000 Mexican soldiers over twice as many French fighters, known as The Battle of Puebla, on May 5th, 1862. For their courage, the day stands as a symbol of Mexican pride. In fact, it has become a trendy holiday for Mexican Americans to celebrate their heritage.
In the US, Mexican-Americans started observing the date during the Civil War. The celebration began in California in 1863 and gained nationwide popularity in the 1980s as a colorful, pleasant festival that celebrates Mexican identity, promotes ethnic consciousness, and, above all, builds community solidarity. We love this day because our community is what EcoBrite is all about.
Celebrating
Although more significant in cities with a larger Mexican population, especially in the south and southwest part of the country, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated all over the USA, with a variety of events, such as parades, and parties, including mariachi bands, Mexican folk music, dancing, and Mexican American cuisines and costumes. Regional celebrations are also tradition, like the chihuahua races in Arizona, the chihuahua beauty contest in Colorado, and some of the largest festivals take place in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston.
These events bring families and people of all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds together. This is the day for Mexican Americans to show pride in their unique heritage. However, on this day, people across the country, whether of Mexican heritage or not, embrace the date.
Even more so than an important historical day, Cinco de Mayo has become a significant commercial day for sales. It is estimated the beer sold on this day can outsell the Super Bowl and Saint Patrick’s Day! Other products, like Tequila and avocados, also have their sales go through the roof on May 5th.
So, we invite everyone to celebrate this iconic day! Join your amigos and have a margarita!
We wish happy celebrations to all who participate.
Feliz Cinco de Mayo!
